Warren C. Friest, 96, a loving husband, father and grandfather, of Rockford passed away Monday, July 25, 2016, in The Villa at P.A. Peterson. Born December 8, 1919, in Radcilffe, Iowa, the son of Paul and Sophia (Holt) Friest. Warren served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Combat Infantryman and Chaplain's Assistant. He received many awards including the American Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Married Ardene Claude on March 10, 1946, in Wells, Minnesota. Employed by the Rockford Register Star for many years. Member of Brooke Road United Methodist Church, and held membership at Western Star Masonic Lodge and the International Typographical Union for over 50 years. Warren volunteered at SwedishAmerican Hospital for over 30 years, receiving numerous awards for joyfully giving over 15,000 hours of service. Warren had a passion for photography, printing and publishing. He was an extraordinary communicator who loved documenting family and community events. Warren enjoyed traveling and meeting people and always had a smile and word of encouragement for everyone he met. Warren's wife, Ardene, was the greatest love and joy of his life and he treasured spending special times with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Ardene; son, Eric (Janet) Friest; daughter, Jane (Rick) Parod; grandchildren, Matthew (Missy) Friest, Matt (Becky) Stender, Adam Parod, David (Sandra) Parod and Stacey (Renan) Lora; great-grandchildren, Tessa, Tori, Colt, Aliyah, Blaine, Mackayla, Mackenzie, Remy, Avery and Owen; brother, Richard (Betty) Friest; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his granddaughter, Farrah Friest-Stender; sister, Gladys Bailey; and brothers, Alan and Donald.
Memorial service at noon Wednesday, Aug. 3, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with visitation from 11 a.m. to service time. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
