Verda Lois (Smith) Jury, 86, of Rockford passed away Monday, May 8, 2017. Born June 25, 1930, in Rochelle, the daughter of William Virden and Jennie Irene (Schmidt) Smith. Graduated from Rochelle High School and Swedish American Nursing School. Married Ralph R. “Lefty” Jury. Formerly employed by Swedish American Hospital and retired as a school nurse from the Harlem Schools. Longstanding member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Rebecca Circle at church. Verda and her family were founders of the Ryan Jury Memorial Golf Outing. She enjoyed nursing, sewing, quilting, music and animals, especially dogs. Verda was known for her kindness, selflessness and was the most nurturing person you would meet. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Verda loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Lefty; children, Debbie (Alan) Goodrich, Greg (Kelly) Jury, Doug (JoAnne) Jury and Cindy (Bob) Slabaugh; grandchildren, Jennie Kirkpatrick, Chad (Jessica Herren) Jury, Julie (Rob) Wiest, Jared (Ashley) Jury, Grace (Dane) Pennacchi, Hannah (Ryan) Fleming, Nathan (Dana) Slabaugh, Justin (Ashley) Slabaugh and Daniel (Kathleen) Slabaugh; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Jackson, Reid, Madisyn, Aubrey, Carson, Delaney, Maddox, Brooklyn, Brodin, Landon, Delilah and Micah; sister, Dorothy Foss; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents; sisters, Mabel Moland, Norma Cole and Katherine McGill; and grandson, Ryan Jury. The family would like to thank River Bluff Nursing Home, Dove unit, for their compassionate and loving care.
Service at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Ryan Jury Memorial Fund.
