Vera Trego

June 20, 1935 — September 22, 2023

Vera L. Trego passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Friday, September 22, 2023.  She was born in Pedro, Ohio, on June 20, 1935, to Walter Sr. and Marjorie (Herrell) Arthurs.  She married William Trego on August 1, 1953.

She will be greatly missed and always remembered for her feisty attitude.  She was quick to take up a spirited argument and would tell you just how tough she was.

At just 25 years old, she traveled with her three children on a ship for seven days to join her Army husband in France, where her fourth child was born.  It took a lot of bravery to travel alone that far with the responsibility of three children under seven years of age, but she did it (against her mother’s protests).

She enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends.  We always had our nightly meal together at the dining room table.  Her love of cooking led her to her favorite job - in the kitchen of the Winnebago schools where her children attended.  Imagine having your mother at your school every day!

In her later years, she enjoyed spending time outside her home enjoying the sunshine and visiting with neighbors that walked their dogs.  She kept a bowl of water and a few toys nearby and the dogs quickly learned to pull their owners up the driveway to visit with her.  We’re sure those dogs are wondering where she is now.

Her daughters, Sherree (Joel) Shadden, and Toni (Jerry) DeVlieger; sons, Rick Trego, and Scott Trego; and her sister, Lynn (Dave) Fogle survive Vera.  She had eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, William on December 19, 1991; her parents; brother, Walter Arthurs Jr.; sister, Norma Williams; and a granddaughter.

The family wishes to thank Mercyhealth Hospice and her private caregiver for their compassionate care.

Enjoy a shot of blackberry brandy and remember this scrappy woman!

A Celebration of Life will be held in October, date to be determined.  Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL.
