Thomas J. Gibbs, 74, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away on July 15, 2026, following a recent decline in health.
Tom graduated from Harlem High School and Northern Illinois University. An accomplished athlete, he qualified for the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament during his senior year at Harlem High School in 1970.
Tom was known for his sharp intellect, dry wit, and quiet loyalty to those fortunate enough to know him. A lifelong student of history and military affairs, he was often described as a walking encyclopedia. He enjoyed golf, reading, music, and playing cards. Those who knew Tom will remember his love of learning, conversations that effortlessly spanned history, countless other topics, and current events.
He is survived by his sister, Laurel Franchini; and his niece, Stephanie Franchini. He was preceded in death by his parents, Duff and Carol Gibbs; and his sister, Anne Gibbs.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Melissa, Laneisha, Tanisha, Milva, Deb, Therese, and Ramon of River Bluff, and to Lydia of OSF Hospice, for the compassion, kindness, and dignity they showed Tom during the final chapter of his life.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Cremation rites accorded. Inurnment in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, Illinois. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL. His memory will forever be cherished.
