Sonia Irene Smeltzer

Sonia Irene Smeltzer, 78, of Loves Park, IL, passed away peacefully Friday, July 14, 2023, in her home. Born July 21, 1944, in Alhambra, CA, the daughter of Sofus and Viola (Roos) Michelsen. Married Robert L. Smeltzer on October 19, 1963, in Loves Park. Formerly employed by Inner City Box & Plastic and recently employed by Artline Screen Printing, retiring in 1994. Member of St. Bridget Catholic Church and Harmony Singing Society. Sonia was a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and roller skating. Sonia loved early morning bike rides, walks, sewing, dancing, billiards, and table tennis. Survivors include her daughter, Janet (Tom) Hooker of Rockford, IL; son, Jason (Sherri McCrary) Smeltzer of Loves Park; grandchild, Broderick Hooker; brother, William Michelsen of California; sister-in-law, Debbie Smeltzer; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents; husband; sister, JoAnn Walker; and niece, Michelle Barnett. The family wishes to thank the caregivers Patty, Katy, Carissa, and Mercy Health Hospice for their care and support.

Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2023, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 600 Clifford Ave., Loves Park, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to service time. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
