Ronald “Ron” W. Flanders, Sr., 77, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away Friday, September 13, 2024, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born January 27, 1947, in Rockford, IL, to John W. and Esther (Fossler) Flanders. Married his loving wife, Sue Kibby, on August 8, 1970, in Rockford. Ron proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict in Germany, achieving a rank of E5 and impressed his fierce love for country into the hearts of his children. Employed as a Union Plumber Local 23 for almost 50 years, working at the Byron Nuclear Power Plant and the Rockford Housing Authority. Ron served on the finance committee of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 23 for 30 years until suffering a massive stroke in 2020. He served as an honorary deputy sheriff and was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Club. Ron cherished time spent outside working on his yard and took care of his daughters’ yards until he was no longer able. He loved spending time with his family and thoroughly enjoyed his grandson’s sporting events. His family will lovingly remember his whistling, his gift for gab and the image of him sitting on the porch in his overalls with a meatloaf on the grill. Survivors include wife, Sue; children, Rhonda (Joe) Trapani, Ron (Lisa) Flanders, Jr., and Ginger (Shaun) Neubauer; grandchildren, Audrey, Aidan, Ashton Neubauer, Leah Flanders and Ellie Trapani; sister, Sue (Richard) Becker; nieces and nephew, Amanda Becker, Jake Becker and Kibbie Wilson; sister-in-law, Patti Scott. Predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Glenn Kibby.
Service at 11 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2024, at Windsor Baptist Church, 1115 Windsor Road, Loves Park, IL. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Rockford, IL. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park.
