Robert “Bob” J. Young Robert J. Young, 99, of Rockford, IL, was called home on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Wesley Willows. Born March 16, 1926, in Wausau, WI, the son of Walter and Meta Young. Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He married Joreen M. Rock on January 3, 1948, in Wausau. Employed by the Harlem School District from 1957 until his retirement in 1984. Former head football coach at Harlem High School. Member of Grace Lutheran Church. IHSA football, basketball official. Bob w
as a three-sports star at Stout, earning four letters in football and baseball and one in basketball. He was the most valuable player on the 1949 football squad and an all-conference selection in 1946 and 1947 at halfback. He ranked tenth in scoring history with 66 points and held a university career kicking record with 30 of 39 points after touchdowns. He was inducted into U.W. Stout’s inaugural athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. Bob, who received his bachelor's degree in 1950 from Stout, has had a combined career in teaching, coaching and officiating. He taught building construction at Loves Park, IL, where his students have built and sold eight homes. He served as president of the Midwest Officials Association and also was selected to officiate an Illinois state tournament football game.
Bob built homes for all four of his children. Avid Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packer Fan.
Survivors include his sons, Dan (Suzie) of Batavia, IL, and Robert (Cheri) Young of Roscoe, IL; daughters, Jane (Carl) Breitlow of Franklin, Wis., and Jill (Tom) McKay of Naperville, IL; grandchildren, Michael (Heather) McKay, Katie (Ettore) Parente, Kelly (Myles) Reif, Trisha Breitlow, Jeff (Amy) Breitlow, Matt (Leslie) Young, Jimmy (Alex) Young, Joey (Kelly) Young, Amber (Jason) Leitner, Lindsey (Bill) Boylan, Maddie Sobojinski, and Olivia Sobojinski; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; wife; sister, Gertrude Olson; and brothers, William Young and Wallace Young. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church, 343 Grand Ave., Loves Park, IL.
