Robert “Bob” J. Porod, 92, of Rockford, IL, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 15, 2024, in his home. He was born on February 21, 1932, in Chicago, IL, the son of Lambert F. and Helen (Hourihan) Porod. Bob served honorably in the U.S. Army and later earned his master’s degree from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University. On August 30, 1958, he married Mary E. Quinn in Chicago and devoted 33 years of his career to teaching as a Chemistry Professor at Rock Valley College.
A devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Bob actively served as a Eucharist Minister, bringing solace to residents of P.A. Peterson and Saint Anne Center until his passing. He participated in various church activities and volunteered at St. Anne Center, all while advocating for Pro-Life causes and generously supporting numerous charities. His deep faith was evident in his regular prayer and devotion to spreading religious literature and bulletins, embodying his commitment as a man of God.
Bob was a loving husband who cherished his life with Mary and remained steadfastly devoted to his family through life’s challenges. He took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and keeping up with their activities.
An enthusiast of outdoor activities, Bob enjoyed running marathons, bicycling, hiking, canoeing, and camping, often spending time in his yard, which was admired by many for its beauty. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Loyola sports teams, and occasionally watched baseball and football. His commitment to education led him to establish the Porod Family Scholarship Fund at Rock Valley College.
Bob is survived by his son, Bob Porod; daughters, Susan (Steve) Reeverts, Ann Connolly, Catherine (Alan) Porod August, Amy (Kent) Christen, and Patricia (Mark) Olson; grandchildren, Jonathan Connolly, Benjamin Connolly, Phelan Christen, Gabriel Christen, Kelsey Olson, and Kyley Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents, aunt, Catherine Hourihan; wife, Mary; son-in-law, Tom Connolly; and sister, Cathy Schwier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road, Rockford, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Anne Center, Rock Valley College for the Porod Family Scholarship Fund, or a charity of your choice.
