Raymond John McCune

Raymond “Ray” John McCune, 46, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at UI Health in Chicago, IL. He was born on Monday, May 12, 1980, in Rockford, IL, the son of Thomas F. and Anita (Lopata) McCune. Ray lived most of his life in the Loves Park, IL, area. For over 25 years he worked as a machinist, employed by some of the Rockford area’s most prominent companies, including Woodward Governor and Ingersoll Machine Tools. In his early years, he also volunteered as a firefighter with the Loves Park Fire Department. Ray was a dedicated sports fan, with his favorite teams being the Green Bay Packers and L.A. Dodgers. His lifelong passion for auto racing started at an early age going to the Rockford Speedway, where he later became involved as a crew member helping numerous teams. Ray also enjoyed open wheel racing, specifically dirt races. From a dedicated fan watching from home or at the track, some of his best memories were the times he helped his nephew, Zach, and a few others he became friends with throughout the years in the pits. His heart of gold shined bright, he had a love for all animals. The children in his life were drawn to his gentle demeanor. Ray was a genuine friend who cared for and often put others before himself, always offering support or a helping hand. He will be deeply missed; his family and friends will forever cherish the times shared and promise to forever honor his memory. Survivors include his fiancée, Katie Burkum; twin brother, Ryan McCune; uncle, Pete (Diane) Lopata; niece, Elizabeth; siblings, Tina and Tom; nephews, Zach and Cade; along with numerous cousins. Predeceased by his parents; grandparents; and uncle, John Lopata.

Funeral service for Raymond will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL, with visitation from 12 p.m. until the time of service. Procession and burial immediately following the funeral in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for a memorial to be established.
