R. Walter "Rod" Smith

R. Walter “Rod” Smith, 80, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away after a long illness, Tuesday, February 4, 2025.  Born February 28, 1944, in Rochester, New York, son of Earl A. Smith and Gertrude (Dickie) Smith.  Walt was the youngest of 11 children.  Veteran of the U.S. Navy.  He served for six years on the USS Franklin.  He married Sheri Fletcher on October 29,1988, in Rockford.  He Retired from Omron.  Member of Rock Church.  He served as an usher, sang in choir and worked on the sound system.  Walt enjoyed playing music.  He was in several bands.  He played numerous instruments, but his favorite was the Guitar.  He enjoyed antiquing, Flea Markets, Music Festivals especially loved Country Music, reunion and family get togethers.  Survivors include his wife, Sheri; daughter, Gretschen (Ed) Soble; grandchildren, Jordon, Cheyanne, Kylee, Emilie, Hannah, Ace, Abigail, and Claudia; great-grandchildren, Elana, Levi, Addy, Zevah, Eliza, Colton, Zoey, Jeremy, Erik, Brooke, Kyland, and Cora; sisters, Beth Wallace and Claire Smith; numerous nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by his parents; son, Christopher Rodney Smith; siblings, Herbert, Nina, Edward, Frances, Beverly, Erle, Earlene, and Louise.

A celebration of life will be at a later date.  Cremation rites accorded.  Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, Illinois.
