Philip J. Skiba, of Loves Park, IL, took the next step in his eternal journey on Saturday, August 24, 2019, surrounded by family at the Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon, IL, on his 85th birthday. Born August 24, 1934, in Springfield, IL. Phil is a 1953 graduate of McHenry High School. He married his wife Donna (Cundiff) Skiba on August 21, 1954, in McHenry, IL, and was blessed to celebrate 65 years of marriage prior to leaving to be with his Lord.
Phil will always be remembered for his enthusiasm and the love he gave. He brightened the lives of those in his presence and brought joy to every moment. He made time for grandkids, welcomed everyone, and always provided the best food -- and plenty of it. His loving bear hugs will be missed and never forgotten. He was a living example of a loving and dedicated husband, and lived in celebration of his wife, Donna. His friends and family witnessed this in many ways, including his frequent, playful comments about how he had the best girl.
Phil served for six years in the Army National Guard, and his professional life was centered around serving the communities in which he lived. Some will remember him as a butcher in the Jewel meat department, and others might recognize him as the owner of multiple businesses including Cheese World, Phil’s Snack Shop, Submarine Car Wash, and Gas-n-Glo car wash. Besides being an astute and successful businessman, Phil took tremendous joy in delivering a high-quality service to his customers and valued the friendships he was able to build along the way.
Phil is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Bonnie (Dale) Hoglund, Bob (Carrie) Skiba, Barb (Jim) Mikrut and Beth (Jamie) Fiorda; his grandchildren, Seana (Joe) Horn, Corey Skiba, Morgan Skiba, Sarah (Marcos) Hernandez, Erin Mikrut, Jacob Fiorda, Lilian Fiorda and Camille Fiorda; his great-grandchildren, Landon, Liam and Jocelyn Horn and Joaquin, Zion and Lily Hernandez. He is predeceased by his parents, Philip and Lillian (FioRito) Skiba; and siblings, Patricia and Theordore Skiba.
The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 7424 North 2nd Street, Machesney Park, IL, with visitation from 10 a.m. to service time.
