Norma Ruth Spitzmiller, 102, of New Milford, IL, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Neighbors Health Center, Byron, IL, after lifelong service to God and family. She was born on February 20, 1923, in Mabel, MN, the daughter of George and Beulah (Soiney) Larson. Norma attended a one room country school in Riceford, MN. She was confirmed in Riceford, then graduated high school in Mabel, MN. She married Bryan John Spitzmiller on June 15, 1946, in Fredericktown, MO, after he returned from World War II. Norma worked at National Lock until she suffered a hand injury. She then trained to become a beautician, continuing her home business into her 90’s with a dedicated following of customers and friends. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Rebecca Circle for over 60 years; coordinating funeral lunches, baking cakes, and homemade donuts for church service and quilts for world relief. She had lifelong special friends at Bethlehem. After the death of her husband, Bryan in 1997, she was happy to continue living independently in her home thanks to the ever-present support of her son, Larry. Survivors include her sons, Gary (Sandy) Spitzmiller of Roscoe, IL, Larry (Margo) Spitzmiller of South Beloit, IL; daughter, Helen Ruth Link of Loves Park, IL; grandsons, Marcus (Carrie) Spitzmiller of Roscoe, IL, Michael (Danielle) Spitzmiller of California, David (Geraldine) Link of Denver, CO, Jason (Stacie) Link of Highlands Ranch, CO, Ryan Link of Loves Park, IL, and Zachary Spitzmiller of Roscoe, IL; granddaughters, Linzi Spitzmiller of South Beloit, IL, Lindsey (Jarrett) Bronson of Cape Coral, FL, Courtney (Joe) Stoffey of Plainfield, IL; great-grandchildren, Catherine and Ryan Spitzmiller, Sophie and Charlie Link, Kylie, Jase, and Brooke Link, Alexa, Myles, and Ella Link, Elia Spitzmiller, Presley and Dax Stoffey; sisters-in-law, Helen Larson and Marcia Larson, both of Mabel, MN, and Dorothy Polio of Alton, IL; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and their families; and many cousins in Milwaukee, WI. Predeceased by her parents, George and Beulah Larson; husband, Bryan; daughter, Sheryl Messina; sisters, Bernice Garness, Helen Beaman, Marie Betsinger; and brothers, Harold, Leslie, Leland, and Richard Larson. Norma's family would like to express gratitude for her excellent care and compassion received at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, and Neighbors Health Center, in Byron, IL.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4620 20th Street, Rockford, IL, with Reverend Wendy Popp officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time. Burial in New Milford, IL, Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
