Norma Jean Peterson
Norma Jean (Garrett) Peterson, 96, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefullly Saturday, July 22, 2023, in her home at Independence Village. Born December 28, 1926, in Galveston, TX, the daughter of Benjamin “Ben” and Nora (Kolstad) Garrett. Soon the Garretts returned to Wilmot, SD, where she spent much of her childhood. During the great depression, they moved to Cherry Valley, IL, where she attended school and helped her family during hard times. Helping others became the primary purpose of her loving and productive life. She married Hugo “Pete” Carl Peterson, Jr., on November 16, 1946, in Loves Park, IL. He died three days after they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. They were members of Grace Lutheran Church in Loves Park. Although recognized as a hard worker, she will be remembered as a devoted, loving and kind soul. After working in a variety of jobs since the 1940's, she retired at age 85. Her last position was at United Flooring, where she was a bookkeeper. Finally, with time for herself, she enjoyed lots of lunches out with her sister and friends. Her heart was filled with love for others. She leaves behind her grandsons, Dustin, and Benjamin Peterson and their mother, Tina (Monty Williams) Peterson; her sister, Marian Strand, special cousin, Mary Ryan; and several nieces and nephews; along with her friends, many at Independence Village. She is predeceased by her husband, Pete; son, Don; her brothers and their wives, Frank (Noreen) Garrett, and Royce (Joan) Garrett; and brother-in-law, Gerald Strand. Her faith and perseverance carried her throughout her life. In her final months, the services of Northern Illinois Hospice were instrumental in her care. Thank you to each staff member who assisted her in such meaningful ways.
