Mitchell “Mick” R. Garman, Sr.
Mitchell “Mick” R. Garman, Sr., 72, of South Beloit, IL, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 24, 2023, in his home. Born November 16, 1950, in Freeport, IL, the son of Russell and Evelyn (Rodermel) Garman. Graduated from Shannon High School, Class of 1969. Veteran of the U.S. Army. Married Ruth Alt on November 24, 2006, in Rockton, IL. Mitch was employed as a railroad conductor, starting with the Milwaukee Road Railroad in 1969. He continued working on the railroad as the company continually changed its name over the years from Milwaukee Road Railroad to Soo Line in 1986, Canadian Pacific in 1993, IMRL in 1997, IC&E in 2002, and then DM&E. He retired from DM&E in 2012. He was a member of American Legion in Rockton, Oak Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club, and several South Beloit Country Clubs. Avid NASCAR fan. Mitch enjoyed snowmobiling and riding on his pontoon. With Mitch, there was always a party or get-together in his garage. His garage was his happy place where he taught family and friends how to fix cars and cook. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; daughters, Heather (Rich) Christophersen, and Katie (Alex) Alt; grandchildren, Ricky (Austin) Christophersen, Hailie Garman, Derek Neal, and Andrew Russell, Jr.; mother- and father-in-law, Fran and Larry Layman; sister, Alnona (Denny) Rippy; brother-in-law, Derek (Laura) Layman; and sisters-in-law, Stacy Peters, and Diane Pelayo; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; son, Micky Garman, Jr.; brother, Ricky Garman; and brother-in-law, Chad Layman.
Service at noon Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL, visitation from 10 a.m. to service time. Cremation rites accorded. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
