Mary E. Smith, 73, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 3, 2023, surrounded by her family. Born September 5, 1949, in Belvidere, IL, the daughter of Everett and Marion (Wright) Straw. Employed by Walter Lawson Children’s Home for 24 years, retiring August 4, 2008. Mary loved spending time with family and friends, and her grandchildren were the loves of her life. She enjoyed traveling, time at home on her deck and watching the wildlife with her husband. Mary loved being with her family for the holidays, especially Christmas. Survivors include her husband, Steven L. Smith; daughters, Maribeth (Trenell) Harrisand Sara (John) Watkins; sons, Gerald Smith and Steven A. Smith; grandchildren, Briana, Milia, Bear, JJ, Lucy, Benjamin, Logan, Denali, Alton, Nicholas, and Matthew; sister, Luann Caltagerone; two other siblings; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Mike and Sandy Hanford and family, Bruce and Carol Rebelak and family. Predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Jerry Verstynen; and brother, Charles Baggett.

Memorial service at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL, with visitation from 3 p.m. to service time. Cremation rites accorded. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
