Martin “Leon” Winberry, 59, of Rockford passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018, in SwedishAmerican Hospital. Born July 11, 1959, in the little town of Senath, MO, the son of Martin L. and Ruby Leona (Cagle) Winberry. As a little boy, he helped his dad and grandpa harvest cotton in Senath. His grandpa was also an artist who etched works of art onto glass door gun cabinets. The fascination and love of these sand-blasted works of art inspired Leon. So, in the 1990's he began his own business called "A'Leon Creations". His works were sold at art shows and to local businesses. He created everything from glass tables, mirrors, vases and dinnerware, to windows and doors for commercial jobs. His family moved to Rockford in the early 60's and he began BMX racing which later led to his motocross racing days. At the top of his game, he finished 9th in the state. In more recent years he also enjoyed RC racing with many friends. Leon was a member of the Northern Illinois Jeep Alliance. He loved attending car shows and won several trophies for his big blue jeep “Jeepzilla”. Leon was a longtime employee of Barber Colman Company where he worked as a die cast operator. He was also employed as a Septran driver for many years. This was the perfect job for him because he loved helping children. He was the roadie for the local band “Ript” in the late 80's. With a colorful personality and a wardrobe to match, he earned the nickname “Neon Leon”. In 1998, Leon and his “better half'” Gay, resurrected the Highland Neighborhood Association, which is still active today. He was always quick to smile and help others. Often mowing lawns and shoveling sidewalks for neighbors who were unable to do these tasks. Whenever he was thanked, he would say, “God helps those who help others”. Survivors include his “better half” for 28 years, Gay Campbell; his beloved dog, Nemo; brother-in-law, Rich (Verda) Barclay and their children, Alex Barclay, Cassie Barclay and LaBree (Scott) Paukner and their son, Elliott Paukner; and many close friends throughout the years. Predeceased by his parents and sister, Vicky Winberry.
