Marcella Irene Mace
Marcella Irene Mace, 94, of Rockford, IL, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023, at River Bluff Nursing Home. She was born October 20, 1928, in Seward, IL, the daughter of Franklin Theodore and Wilhelmina Johanna (Ackerman) Ranken. She graduated from Stillman Valley High School where she was a class officer every year. She married the love of her life, Gaylon Garth Mace, on February 14, 1948, in Davis Junction, IL. She lived 47 years in the Rockford area, coming here from Steward, where she raised her two children. Marcella and Gaylon owned and operated a butchering business for the Steward farming community. They were very active in school and church activities with their children. She was employed by Carron Spinning. After moving to Loves Park, IL, in 1967, she was employed by Larson Food Service, then Rockford Morning Star, Gannett, and retired from the Rockford Register Star in 1993. She was a lifelong member of Steward Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and Cub Scout Den Mother. Marcella was an officer of the Mended Hearts. She was a Boy Scouts Leader and School Room Mother. Marcella attended school activities, was an election judge and hospital volunteer at Swedish American Hospital. She most of all loved her family. Marcella and Gaylon always made family their number one priority. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, cooking, and playing with her grandchildren. Survivors include her son, Terry (Cindy) Mace; daughter, Connie (Richard) Dowling; grandchildren, Kelly (Timothy) Augustine, Tiffany Mace, Timothy Dowling, and Tammy Burkon; great-grandchildren, Brittney (Tyler) Hill, Cody (Shala) Augustine, Ashley Mace, Nicholas Mace, Austin Burkon, and Isabella Burkon; great-great-grandchildren, Emma Hill, Abbie Hill, Cooper Augustine, Greyson Mace-Johnson, and Lakelynn Johnson; sister, Pearl Fromm; sister-in-law, Joetta Wyatt; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Gaylon of 65 years; brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis (Estalee) Ranken, Arnold (Margaret) Ranken, Wallace “Boots” (Doris) Ranken, Summer (Mildred) Ranken, Donald (Betty) Ranken, Sheryl (Raymond) Preiss, and Loree (Billy) Bailey; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy (Enoch) Talley.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2023, at Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave., Rockford, IL, with visitation from 10 a.m. to service time. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL.
