Magdalen G. Scheid, 89, of Rockford passed away Monday, June 1, 2020, at Rosewood Care Center. Born June 12, 1930, in East Prairie, Missouri, the daughter of Lester T. and Mamie (Eiceman) Rodgers. Married Joseph L. Scheid on April 9 ,1952, in Pocahontas, Arkansas. They came to Rockford on their honeymoon and liked it so well that they moved here in 1952. When Magdalen found out she was pregnant, they moved back to Pocahontas to be with family for the birth of their first child in 1954. When their baby girl was two years old, they moved back to Rockford along with her parents who lived with them until they passed away. Magdalen started working at National Lock until she earned her real estate license and then her broker’s license. She made an exceptionally good living selling real estate for most of her life. Joseph and Magdalen were very active in the Catholic Church and involved at St. Rita’s Church I Rockford. She was president of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Rita’s, then she became president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, president of the Illinois Council of Catholic Women and finally president of the National Council of Catholic Women. She was an avid seamstress who enjoyed sewing with her three sisters when they got together. She designed and sewed clothes for herself, many nieces and family. Also, she designed vestments for the priests and altar cloths for both St. Mary’s Church in downtown Rockford at St. Rita’s Church. She was also very talented in writing, and she wrote a book of her family genealogy, after much research dating back to the 1800s in Germany. Joseph and Magdalen visited Germany several times and spent time with relatives she had found in her research. Later in life, she suffered with Alzheimer’s disease and lived at Rosewood Care Center for the past seven years. According to staff, she was their favorite patient, as she was always smiling and pleasant. Survivors include her only child, Dolores Colleen (Steve) Riggle; grandchildren, Michael (Renee) Jamison, Jr., Michelle (Erick) Lopez, Grant (Brooke) Jamison, Melissa (Issac) Hofman, Lindsay Jamison, Jeremy Riggle and Emily (Jeremy) Hatches; great-grandchildren, Ella and Avery Jamison, Ashton and Marissa Houtz, Alexander and Jacob Lopez, Joseph and Julian Martinez, Janelle Hofman, Brant and Brock Jamison, twins Melora and Alia Kiley, Dallas Collins and Audrey Christiasen; many nieces and nephews; and special niece, Janet (John) Kapotas. Predeceased by her parents; and husband, Joseph on September 3, 2000, in Rockford.
