Lucile Maye Smith
Lucile Maye Smith, 80 years old, of Surprise, AZ, (formerly of Machesney Park, IL) passed away on March 13, 2022, at Marie Silver Assisted Living Facility in Surprise. Born December 28, 1941, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Harry and Lucile (Miller) Martz. She was later raised in Hannibal, WI, by her mother and stepfather, Lucile and Richard Mudgett. Lucile married the love of her life, Charles L. Smith, in Rockford, IL, on December 10, 1966. Together they celebrated 41 years of marriage and had two children. Lucile dedicated her life in the service to others. Whether it was working for the Harlem School District in Machesney Park or through ministry work at North Love Baptist Church in Rockford, where she was a long-time member. She loved helping others. During her 40 years with the Harlem School District, Lucile worked in many capacities, including as a school bus driver for special needs children. Lucile loved “her kids” and they were the source of some of her greatest joys in life. Survivors include her children, Cindy (Dave) Shoultz and Patrick (Susan) Smith; eight grandchildren, Megan (Buddy), Brenton (Stephanie), Melissa, Quincy, Kiersten (AJ), Miranda, Mackenzie, and Gresham; five great-grandchildren; her siblings, Clyde (Eileen), Leroy (Jackie), Martha (Ed), George (Carol), Debbie (Mike), Betty (Jim), Norman (Marcine), Pat (Hugh), and Dale. Lucile is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; siblings, Joseph and Dick; and granddaughter, Brittana.
Celebration of life will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Delahanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL, with memorial visitation from 3 p.m. to service time. Inurnment for Lucile will be at a later date. She will be interred with her beloved husband, Charles, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Machesney Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Harlem School District to benefit special needs children.
