Lois Laverne Block, 93, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. Born February 21, 1931, in Rockford, IL. Graduated from West High School, Class of 1948. She married Howard W. Block on November 25, 1950, in Rockford. Employed by Swedish American Hospital as the admitting supervisor for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Lois started flying at 16 years old. She soloed on June 10, 1948, at 17 years old at Cottonwood Airport. She later passed her flying test in 1951. Lois was a voracious reader and loved to travel. She co-chaired the first Rockford Open Ice-Skating Competition at Riverview Ice House. Lois was very mechanically inclined and worked on and repaired her own computers. Survivors include her daughter, Amy (Jay Worley) Block; grandchildren, Michelle Heinze, Jerry Heinze, and Nathaniel Young. Predeceased by her mother, Betty Duryea; husband of 54 years, Howard; daughter, Laurie Young; son, Jim Block; grandson, Jimmy Heinze; and sister, Elaine (Hank) Lewis.
