Leonard M. Bunk, 86, of Machesney Park passed away Monday, February 13, 2017, in his home. Born February 1, 1931, in Kendall, WI, the son of Joseph and Glennie (Newkirk) Bunk. Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. Leonard served on the USS Midway as a photographer. Married Geraldine Halbin on May 4, 1957, in Rockford. Employed by Rockford Systems for 37 years. Member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. He loved fishing and camping with his grandchildren. Leonard enjoyed attending and showing his dogs in shows. He had 13 dogs that placed as grand champion. He was an avid Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks and Ice Hogs fan. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; son, Tim (Teri) Bunk; daughter, Theresa Bunk-Schmit; grandchildren, Carolyn (Juan) Torales, Andrea (Kurt Thingvold) Bunk, Jennifer (Tim Huckabee) Bunk, Chelsea (Ravi) Lulla and Nicholas (Amanda) Schmit; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, John (Judy) Bunk; and sister, Veronica Gayle. Predeceased by his granddaughter, Natalie Schmit; brothers, David and Dennis Bunk; and sister, Reva Riley.
Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, in St. Bridget Catholic Church, 600 Clifford Ave., Loves Park. Burial in Willwood Burial Park. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 20, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
