Joseph Newell Smith

Joseph “Joe” Newell Smith, 88, of Loves Park, IL, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. He was born on Wednesday, November 17, 1937, in Hattieville, AR, the son of Jesse Lee and Essie Mae (Johnson) Smith. Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Sallie Carol Widmer, on October 19, 1963, in Rockford, IL. Joe was employed by Schnucks Markets Inc. for 34 years, retiring in 2021. Member of Riverside Community Church. Survivors include his sons, David Allen (Tina) Smith of Machesney Park, IL, and Scott Robert Smith of Rochester, MN; granddaughters, Jessica, Brittany, Allyson, Sydney, Oliviya, and Karise Smith; grandsons, Caleb, Joshua, and Elijah Smith; 4 great-grandchildren; and friend, Charlotte Hunt of Richmond, IN. Predeceased by his parents and wife.

Memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Riverside Community Church, 6816 North 2nd Street, Machesney Park, IL, with a memorial visitation from 10 a.m. to service time. Cremation rites accorded. Inurnment at a later date in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL.
