Joseph Edwin Johnson, 87, of Machesney Park passed away Friday, January 8, 2016, in SwedishAmerican Hospital. Born December 8, 1928, in Red Oak, the son of John and Luella E. (Rader) Johnson. Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. Married Bernita P. Stees on July 17, 1954, in Rockford. Employed by Bricklayers & Allied Craftsman for 35 years, retiring in 1990. Member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, Cubs and Bears fan. Joseph loved hunting and fishing, well into his 80’s, with his sons and grandsons, teaching them the skills and safety. Survivors include sons, Greg (Colleen) Dunbar, Michael (Betty) Johnson, and Phillip Johnson; daughter, Diane (Patrick) Hamilton; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Johnny (Ruth) Johnson; sister, Betty Rupnow; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, in St. Bridget Catholic Church, 600 Clifford Ave., Loves Park. Burial in Louisa Cemetery, Lena. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 11, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with Rosary recited at 7 p.m.
