John R. “Big John” Fulling, Sr., 80, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024, in his home, surrounded by his family. Born April 24, 1943, in Rockford, IL, the son of Clyde C. and Adeline M. (Cichella) Fulling. Graduated from West High School, Class of 1961. Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He married Nina Sacco on September 11, 1965, in Rockford. Formerly employed by Calkins & Company as a food sales rep and then worked for and retired from the State of Illinois Lottery. Member of St. Bridget Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th
degree knight. Was a volunteer sheriff’s deputy. John donated a lot of his earnings to St. Jude, and he helped support two children being raised in the Catholic charities. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Nina; sons, John (Susan) Fulling, Jr., and Peter (Lori) Fulling; grandchildren, Ali (Greg) Watson, Emily Fulling, Cassidy (Sheldon) Lopez, and Caleb Fulling; siblings, Beverly Franklin, Teresa (Randy) Roberts, and Peter (Sherry) Franklin; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; adoptive father, Warren Franklin; grandparents, Frank and Mary Cichella; siblings, Sylvia J. Hosking, Charles Franklin, Ingrid Amberg, and David P. Fulling. Special thanks to his caregiver Roxie Hemmerly, Northern Illinois Hospice and their entire staff, especially Lily and Nick. Thank you to neighbors, Chris and Karen Milburn and special friends Mary and Jim Freeman for everyone’s care and support.
Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2024, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 600 Clifford Ave., Loves Park, IL, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to service time. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Winnebago, IL. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
