Jerry “Big Jer” L. Shreve, Sr., 83, of Machesney Park, IL, was called home Saturday, December 7, 2024. Born November 18, 1941, in Cherokee, KS, the son of George and Lavina (Hughes) Shreve. He married Mary Rafferty on October 12, 1963, in Rockford, IL. After retiring as a machine operator, he drove bus for the Harlem School District. Member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. He loved spending time with his family. Jerry enjoyed playing and watching baseball, softball, and attending his children’s sporting events. He also enjoyed tinkering in the garage, building bird houses, reading, puzzles, and watching Westerns. Avid Notre Dame, Chicago Bears, and Cubs fan. Survivors include his wife, Mary; children, Kelly (Scott) Rink, Jerry (Teresa) Shreve Jr., and Michelle (Jackie, Jr.) Derry; grandchildren, Angela (Mitch) Lask, Mitchell (Rachel) Shreve, Mason (Samantha) Shreve, Alexandra Derry, and Jackie (Taylor) Derry III; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Elsie Lask, Emmitt and Finnley Shreve, and Anastasia Derry; brother, Donald (Margi) Shreve; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; great-granddaughter, Tinsley Shreve; great-grandson, Roland Shreve; 10 brothers and sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2024, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 600 Clifford Ave., Loves Park, IL, with visitation from 9 a.m. to service time. Burial in Scottish Argyle Cemetery, Caledonia, IL. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
