Jeane Shallenberger (Schwenk)

April 18, 1932 — April 8, 2024

Henrietta Jeane Shallenberger, 91, of Rockton, IL, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, April 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and her sweet dog, Sam, who never left her side, or her feet.

Born April 18, 1932, in Rockford, IL, Jeane was the daughter of William Alfred and Leota Murrial (Froh) Schwenk.  She proudly graduated from Harlem High School, Class of 1950.  She was a dedicated member of Willow Creek Presbyterian Church in Argyle, IL, and worked for Dr. Phillip Dupont and Dr. Sung Chow, at the same clinic for 40 years.  After her retirement, at the age of 80, she then volunteered at the local elementary school, where she helped students with reading.

Jeane was full of love and energy, raising eight children:  Jody Peavler, Betsy (Tom) Oswald, Ted (Jean) Shallenberger, John Shallenberger, Dann Shallenberger, Jamie (Doug) Powell, Joy (Steve) Langley, and Joshua Johnson.

She adored her many grandchildren and their spouses:  Jessie (Austin) Crow, Maggie (Nick) Oswald Sandquist, Kelsie (Andrew) Burns, Allison (Craig) Nenneman, Amy (Jason) Madel, Elijah (Hannah) Shallenberger, Dylan (Gardenia) Shallenberger, Matthew Shallenberger, and Mandi Shallenberger, along with her numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Throughout her life, Jeane cherished her friendships, including special bonds with Becky Aylesworth and Marilyn & Jerry Johnson.  She will be remembered for her warmth and kindness, always there with a listening ear or a comforting word.

She is predeceased by her parents; her former husband of 32 years, Fred Shallenberger; son, Ted; brothers, Joseph Schwenk and John Schwenk; grandchildren, Zachary Peavler and Casey Peavler; sisters-in-law, Ruth Corning and Virginia Schwenk; close friends of 80+ years who became family, Ruth & Bob Hughes.

Jeane’s spirit of community extended beyond her family and friends.  She served as a Deacon at Willow Creek Presbyterian Church and dedicated many years as an election judge in Loves Park.  She was a firm believer in the importance of participation and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their passions, whether it was sports, music, school, or theater.  She showed up for everything - concerts, football games, baseball and softball games, swim meets, dance recitals, plays and any other event big or small.

In her free time, Jeane found joy in reading and cheering on her favorite sports teams and athletes, especially in football and golf.  Her love for life was infectious, and she brought her brightness (and potato salad or noodles) to every gathering she attended.  Her phone rang all day long as she stayed connected to friends and family near and far.  For many years she had a monthly potluck with her nurse’s training friends and monthly lunches with her girlfriends from high school.  She could tell you every detail about her great-grandchildren’s lives.  She never wanted to miss an important moment in the life of someone she loved.  She loved to travel, even in her 90s, and usually found her way to warmer weather once a year.

A celebration of Jeane’s life will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Willow Creek Presbyterian Church, located at 7300 Belvidere Road, Caledonia, IL, with visitation to be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.  Arrangements are entrusted to Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL.

Jeane’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.  She will be deeply missed.
