Janet Lucille Simpson, 97, of Machesney Park, IL, passed away on April 22, 2025. She was born on May 14, 1927, in DeKalb, IL, to Andrew and Ruth Pearson. Janet spent her early years in Sycamore before she moved to DeKalb, where she graduated from DeKalb Township High School in 1945. On July 14, 1945, in Kansas City, KS, Janet married William J. Simpson, shortly after his return from serving in the Pacific during World War II. The couple began their life together in Lindenwood, IL, and moved to Loves Park, IL, in 1961. They raised two children and shared many cherished years together before William’s passing in 1974.
Janet devoted herself to her family and home while also working various jobs in her early years. After relocating to Loves Park, she worked at Barber-Colman from 1961 until her retirement in 1989. Outside of work, Janet had a passion for music, crafting, and nature. She played the piano and organ both at home and in church, enjoyed crocheting and sewing, and loved spending time outdoors. She was an avid gardener with a green thumb, taking great pleasure in nurturing her flowers and vegetables, while also enjoying the birds that visited her feeders. Janet also cherished opportunities to travel, visiting family in California and Hawaii, and creating unforgettable memories with her granddaughters on special trips.
Janet was well-known for her sweet tooth, with a particular fondness for chocolate. A talented baker, Janet’s delicious homemade treats were always a highlight of family gatherings. Throughout her life, Janet also found great joy in the companionship of her beloved dogs, each one a dear and faithful friend, with whom she shared a multitude of bowls of popcorn.
Janet will be remembered for her generous spirit, deep love of family, and tireless work ethic. She took immense pride in the achievements of her loved ones, always finding joy in their successes and eagerly sharing their accomplishments with others.
Janet leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Linda Terviel of Machesney Park; son, Robert Simpson of Rockford; and her beloved grandchildren, Lora (Jeffrey) DeWall of Poplar Grove, IL, and Lisa (Randy) Schuld of Machesney Park. She was also a proud “Grandma the Great” to Braden and Olivia Schuld, and Brooklyn and Bryce DeWall. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; brother, Robert Pearson; son-in-law, Gary Terviel; and daughter-in-law, Tammy Mantello.
In accordance with her wishes, a private family burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Machesney Park. Arrangements are being handled by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL.
