Gregory L. Luter, 65, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020, in his home. Born August 2, 1954, in Rockford, the son of H. Lavon and Carrie (Molencupp) Luter. Graduated from Harlem High School, Class of 1972. Married Margaret “Peggy” A. Muraski on June 30, 1995.
After Harlem, Greg attended the Rock Valley College Vo-Tech program and then ran both Derby and Skelly stations. His maintenance career started at Modern Metal Products before being hired away by Fitzgerald Equipment Co. He graduated to big trucks and equipment finding employment at the Rockford Township Department and finally Lowes Distribution Center where he retired in April 2019.
His largest passion was for stock car racing. He began working on crews at the Rockford Speedway at the age of 16 before co-owning a late model with Denny Scace in 1976. Greg started his own team in 1979 and began driving his own car in 1980. He was honored with the “person who contributes the most to further the good image of auto racing” award at the 1978 Rockford Speedway banquet, one of the most prestigious and later renamed the Hugh Deery Memorial Award. He also won the late model “most improved driver” award in 1981 after winning his first race. He was a proud Mopar supporter and raced them throughout his career. After retiring from driving, Greg later returned to the Rockford Speedway as track photographer and a credentialed photographer for Checkered Flag Racing News. He was a friend to all in his five decades of involvement at Rockford Speedway.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; son, Jason (Jyll) Luter; stepdaughters, Theresa Dittbenner, Rebekah Reed, Sarah Codina and Amanda Vincent; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Steve (Judy) Luter; sister-in-law, Margret Luter; numerous nieces and nephews; best buddy, chocolate lab, Pepsi. Predeceased by his parents; and brother, Rodney Luter. Special thanks to Mercy Health Hospice and nurses on A2 at Mercy Health on Rockton.
Memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with visitation from 11 a.m. to service time.
