Gordon Bindenagel

August 31, 1920 — August 1, 2017

Gordon D. Bindenagel, 96, of Roscoe was called home Tuesday, August 1, 2017. Born August 31, 1920, in Frankfort, SD, the son of Fred and Elsie (Vollmar) Bindenagel.  The family moved to Huron, SD, in 1926, and Gordon attended Huron Schools, graduating high school and attending Huron College, before moving to California to find Defense work.  While in California, he married Patricia J. Williams, on April 15, 1942, in Long Beach, CA, who was also from Huron.  They just recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.  Gordon was called into the U.S. Army in November 1942.  His training was in Oregon, California and Colorado, before being sent to France, where he fought with the 104th “Timberwolf” Infantry Division in the "Battle of the Hürtgen Forest" during the Battle of the Bulge.  He received an honorable discharge in October 1945 and the Bronze Star for valor.  Gordon then returned to Huron, SD, to his family.  While in Huron, he worked for Armour & Company for 20 years before moving to Loves Park, IL, where he retired from Elco Industries in 1983.  He enjoyed traveling, woodworking and singing.  Gordon sang in the Church Choir from age 17 to 93.  He made dollhouses, toy boxes, and other wooden toys for his grandchildren.  His travels took him to Germany twice, Hawaii and plus 50 of the United States.  Many trips, to South Dakota, Montana and Texas to visit friends and family.  He was a member of Willow Creek Presbyterian Church in Caledonia, IL, where he served as Elder, Deacon and member of the Choir.  Life member of the Loves Park VFW Post #9759 and of DAV of Rockford.  Survivors include his wife, Patricia; children, Claudia Crabb of Beloit, WI, J.D. (Jean) Bindenagel of Germany, Denise (Michael) Sorensen of Hudson, WI, Curt (Lora) Bindenagel of Winnebago and Nancy (Johnny) Keen of Roscoe; daughter-in-law, Pam Bindenagel of South Carolina; grandchildren, Larry Simons, Wendy Johnson, Becky (Randy) Smith, Shelly (Kurt) Schmidt, Delvin (Kelly) Crabb, Perry Crabb, Justin (Michelle) Bindenagel, Andre Bindenagel, Nicolas (Carolina) Bindenagel, Danielle (Brad) Felvey, Annamarie (Kenan) Sehovic, Carl Bindenagel, Jason Dupont, Amy (Ryan) McCune, Christopher Sorensen, Sean (Lori) Bindenagel, Joel Bindenagel, Scott (Kayla) Keen and Dillon Keen; 37 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; numerus nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by his parents; son, Steven; 2 brothers; 1 sister.

Memorial service at 11 a .m. Saturday, August 26, in Willow Creek Presbyterian Church, 7300 Belvidere Road, Caledonia, with visitation from 10:30 a.m. to service time. As per his wishes, his body was donated to science.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.  Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., of Loves Park.
