George Roger Dowell

George Roger Dowell, 86, of Rockford, IL, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Born April 24, 1936, in Burlington, IA, the son of George G. and Dorothy M. (Moore) Dowell. Married Mary Alice White on November 27, 1957, in Stronghurst, IL. Graduated from Western Illinois University and received his master’s degree in science from Michigan State University. Employed as a science teacher by Auburn High School, retiring after more than 30 years. After retirement, George worked at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Member of Rockford Garden Club. George loved gardening and bird watching. Avid MSU Alumni. Survivors include his children, Valsheria Langley, Valisa (David) Star, Valana Dowell, and John (Kate) Dowell; grandchildren, Jacob (Sarah Jane) Langley, Graham (Stefany Amacker) Langley, Victoria Langley, Ben Star, Daniel (Nicole) Star, Peter Star, Corbin Dowell, Maya Dowell, Kyra (Andries Labuschagne) Millard, Jordan Millard, Matthew Wandell, Ashley Wandell, and Shondra Wandell; great-grandchildren, Lenox Roger Langley, and Hailey Star; numerous nieces and nephews; honorary family, Deborah Millard and Lorelle (Rob) Wandell. Predeceased by his parents; wife; sister, Ethel M. Pence; and special friend, Marjorie Anderson.

Service at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2023, at Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, IL, with visitation from 10 a.m. to service time. Inurnment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
