Elizabeth “Betty” E. Welsh, 92, of Loves Park, formerly of Byron, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, in Alpine Fireside Health Center, Rockford. Born July 31, 1927, in Rockford, the daughter of Thomas C. and Edna R. (Allen) Young. Attended Byron High School before attending Northern Illinois University, graduating with a B.S. degree in Education of Home Economics. Upon graduation, Betty began a 35-year career in teaching home economics at Harlem High School in Loves Park with a focus on sewing and tailoring. After she retired from teaching, Betty volunteered her services at Rockford Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop. She married Russell A. Welsh on December 31, 1949. Despite her hectic schedule, family and friends were Betty’s passion and delight. Betty and Russell loved to travel, often vacationing in Colorado. One of their most memorable travels was in a motorhome they drove to Alaska. Survivors include her three children, Desa (Douglas) Ciufo of Loves Park, James (Linda) Welsh of Bastrop, TX, and Diane Welsh of Loves Park; three grandsons, Eric (Kerri) Welsh of Houston, TX, Evan (Amber) Welsh of Austin, TX, and Michael Chalmers of Charleston, SC; five great-grandchildren, Susan, Owen, Lucy, Dylan and Kieran; and a number of other loving relatives and close friends. Predeceased by her parents and husband.
Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2020, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with visitation from 6 p.m. to service time. Inurnment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Paynes Point. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Field of Honor in Loves Park.
