Edward "Ed" Weiss

Edward Luther Weiss, 93, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at the Atrium in Rockford on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Born March 11, 1923, in Brewster, MN, the son of the Rev. Joseph Weiss and Dorthea (Balfanz) Weiss. Married Audrey Berg on April 19, 1953. Ed was a devoted Christian and a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survived by children David Weiss and Diane (Doug) Wilson; brothers Melvin (Lil) Weiss and Harold (Shari) Weiss; sisters Bethel (Demetrio) Potente and Josephine Palmer; grandchildren Elena Wilson and Matt, Tim and Tom Weiss; great-grandchildren Emma and Ryan Weiss; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife, Audrey Weiss; son Douglas Weiss; parents; and sisters Irene Stoffel and Adeline Thompson. Ed and Audrey raised their family in Addison, IL. He was employed by Osco Drug for over 40 years. While in Addison, they were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Villa Park. In 2004, Ed and Audrey moved from Addison to Rockford to enjoy retirement years and be closer to family. In Rockford they became active in the Wesley Willows community and Grace Lutheran Church, Loves Park. Audrey passed away in 2014. Ed was a kind and gentle man with a big heart and a good sense of humor. One of his lifelong joys was gardening; he loved to watch his vegetables and flowers grow. Another lifetime joy was music. Ed sang in various church choirs and loved playing piano, even to his final days. Many thanks to all his family and friends, including the pastors and congregation at Grace Lutheran Church for their love and care. The family also wishes to thank those who helped in his care the last two years both at Wesley Willows and at the Atrium. Thanks also to Transitions Hospice for providing support during the last week of his life.

Service at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 19, in Grace Lutheran Church, 343 Grand Ave., Loves Park, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the church. Burial in Willwood Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or Grace Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., Loves Park.
