Donald Wayne Smith, 98, of Loves Park, IL, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2023, at home. Born November 26, 1924, in Chicago, IL, the son of Guy and Letha L. (Kidwell) Smith. Graduated from Harlem High School. Veteran of the U.S. Army. He married his high school sweetheart Grace Shirley Turney on November 9, 1946, in Rockford, IL. Employed as a sprinkler fitter by Rockford Industries Local 669. Donald loved golfing and crossword puzzles. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. Survivors include his son, Craig (Alicia) Smith of Belvidere, IL; daughter, Connie (Steve) Bainter of Roscoe, IL; grandchildren, Steve (Joey) Smith, Chrissy (Tom) Walsh, Ian Temby, Sgt. David Smith, Mike, and Nara; great-grandchildren, Ryan Walsh, Nayana, and Kygo; niece, Jill Heinzeroth. Predeceased by his parents; wife; granddaughter, Andrea Abramson; and sister, Evalyn Heinzeroth.
Graveside service at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 8800 North Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
