Donald L. Samp, 81, of Rockford died Monday, January 11, 2016. Born July 4, 1934, in Rockford, the son of Herbert M. and Amy L. (Tuttle) Samp. Graduated from Harlem High School in 1952 where he lettered in 3 sports. Veteran of the U.S. Navy. Married Donna R. Aldrich on January 24, 1976, in Geneva. He began his career as an industrial pattern maker in a trade he remained in for 52 years. Owned and operated N&S Pattern Co. and Park Pattern Co. for 20 years. Eventually retiring from Clinkenbeard and Associates in 2004. He played softball and basketball in the area for 40 years where he made many lasting friends. He coached Boys Little League Baseball in Loves Park with his children. Donald was a gentleman who was a gentle man. Donald had a lifelong passion for golf who shot his age every year since he was 70. He was a quiet man who enjoyed quiet places. Survivors include his wife, Donna; sons, Chris (Goldberry) Samp and Jay (Karen) Samp; daughter, Wendy (Al) Talignani; stepsons, Ken (Christy) Aldrich, Russ (Gail) Aldrich and Todd Aldrich; grandchildren, Crystal Samp, Danielle (Gary) Gelander, Ashley (Bill) Watts, Kristen (Will) Halfacre, Tyler, Jacob and Emmalee Aldrich, Aidan, Allegra, Javan and Jonah Samp and Melissa Ring; 10 great-grandchildren; nephew, Corey Thomas; previous wife, Donna J. Samp. Predeceased by his parents; son, Greg Samp; and sister, Shirley Thomas.
Service at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 16, in Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 15, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
